High-Intensity Laser Treatment (HILT)
High-Intensity Laser Treatment (HILT) is a class IV laser that delivers light as the therapeutic modality for treatment of pain and tissue healing.
- HILT is a pain-free form of light that penetrates deeply into the tissue causing a photobiomodulation of the cells, specifically the mitochondria, to encourage oxygen absorption of the cells while releasing bi-products of inflammation.
- Photobiomodulation is to human and animal cells as photosynthesis is to a plant cell. It assists in increasing oxygenation and ATP production which is the fuel with which the cell functions.
- It is an FDA approved therapeutic treatment once reserved for elite athletes and is now available to the public.
- The higher light wavelengths at 810 to 1300 nanometers helps the light penetrate soft tissue, muscle, and bone
- HILT successfully treats acute, chronic and neuropathic pain as well as speeds up regeneration of soft tissue trauma. It also promotes wound healing
- The client will feel a nice warm sensation with the treatment. If the on-contact roller balls are used, massage and soft tissue work is performed with the laser application.
- There are NO KNOWN side effects from the use of laser when applied by a well qualified and trained person.
What to expect during treatment?:
Both the client and the therapist will put on protective eye wear to avoid accidental contact with the laser beam. The client will be comfortably positioned with the area of the body exposed as the light cannot effectively penetrate fabric. All treatments occur in a private room with the door closed. If modesty is needed, the patient will be appropriately draped. Because our LightForcelaser can deliver up to 25 Watts of power, the time required for treatment will be relatively short at around 4-8 minutes for something the size of the low back or hip and as short as 20-60seconds on a finger or the TMJ. Treatment parameters are dependent of the size of the treatment area, the amount of power needed to penetrate the tissue and how acute or chronic the condition is. The client will feel the warmth of the laser and if the on-contact roller ball is used, they will feel the pressure of the ball rolling over the skin. Constant communication between the client and therapist is conducted to be certain of avoiding a burning sensation. One can expect some slight change after even one treatment in pain complaints or range of motion of the body part. On average, there is about a 20% improvement after the 1sttreatment and then successive treatments expand the benefits.
How many treatments will I need?
Acute injuries can often be cleared up in 3-6 treatments if caught early. Chronic problems that have been around for several months to years take 8-12 treatments. Recovery is dependent upon what the client does between sessions that either support the healing process or cause a re-injury. Laser treatments are cumulative meaning one can expect to improve for hours to days after the treatment. As more treatments are added, better results can be expected. Extremely chronic conditions may take more treatments over a longer period of time.

What are the Benefits of HILT?
-
Molecular absorption of light along a specific wavelength causes a photochemical response and changes the absorption capability of the mitochondria and cell walls to produce energy and release toxins.
-
Pain relief –o increases oxygenation of the mitochondria which increases production of the needed energy source, ATP.o Can help the body produce and release the natural pain killers known as endorphins and enkephalins.o Alters the chronic pain cycle by changing or suppressing the nerve signals that transmit pain messages to the brain
-
Improves healing and tissue repair after trauma –o Increases blood flow which is carrying oxygen and other vital nutrientso Enhances cell growth of bone, cartilage, muscle, tendons, and other tissues of the body by stimulating DNA and RNA healing factorso Helps speed up the removal of immune system toxins that can create inflammation such as prostaglandin-e. This will decrease swelling.
-
Softens scar tissue by encouraging collagen alignment in an organized pattern as opposed to a chaotic pattern often seen with keloids or old scars.
-
Stimulates healthy nerve function by acting on the mitochondria rich nerve fibers to improve production of oxygen and excretion of toxins in the cells.
-
HILT has NO KNOWN negative side effects when used appropriately by someone well trained to apply it.
